Deputy Minister Gashani: "Citizens reporting of celebratory gunfire have increased"

The meeting of the group for the implementation of the Regional Strategy and Roadmap for Small, Light and Explosive Weapons - SLW was held at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Mr. Blerim Gashani, namely the National Coordinator for the Control of Small Arms, Light Weapons and Explosives.

In this meeting, an overall assessment of all strategic objectives and the practical implementation of the activities arising from the Regional Strategy and Roadmap was made, where it was concluded that a large part of the activities are being implemented according to the planned dynamics, while they also discussed the challenges for some other activities.

This meeting had a special emphasis on the awareness campaign: "Celebrate with your Heart, not your Gun", which is currently being implemented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and on this occasion Deputy Minister Gashani pointed out that this campaign will continue to be dynamic throughout the year in order to achieve the aim of reducing the number of cases where there are celebratory gunfire.

Deputy Minister Gashani pointed out that the campaign is having its effects, as we have an increased number of cases where citizens are reporting these gunfire, while these reporting are being treated seriously in concrete actions by the Kosovo Police who have intervened in the confiscation of weapons and the arrest of suspects.

As an important challenge, in this meeting,  it was discussed the form of qualifying these offenses, in cases where there are gunfire, and the whole group agreed that this form should change in the future based on the laws into force and the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kosovo.
