Xhelal Sveçla, Minister of Internal Affairs
Xhelal Sveçla graduated in the Department of Dentistry at the University of Tirana. He started his studies initially in Prishtina during the 1990s. He started his political activism as one of the organizers of student protests against the Serbian regime, as an executive officer in the Independent Union of Students, in the Medical Commission. In 1998, he joined the Kosovo Liberation Army.
In the professional medical aspect, he worked for organizations and civil society, in Prishtina and Tirana, as Coordinator in International Medical Corps Tirana, and National Director in “SOS Kinderdorf International”, mainly with the responsibility of caring for children in need. In 2003, he joined the Kosova Action Network (KAN), which aimed at social change and active citizenship.
In 2013, he was appointed Director of the Inspection Directorate in the Municipality of Prishtina, where he was tasked with establishing and respecting the rule of law in the Municipality of Prishtina. He focused on defining work responsibilities, training the staff and creating the right conditions for the implementation of tasks in this directorate.
As an MP of the VETËVENDOSJE! Movement, in the sixth legislature, he was the Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Communities, and then Chairperson thereof. He was a member of the Committee on Internal Affairs and Chairperson of the Inquiry Committee regarding the deportation of 6 Turkish citizens.
Upon establishment of Kurti's Government, in February 2020, Mr Sveçla was appointed Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Public Administration, while from 19 March to 3 June of the same year he held the position of Acting Minister in the same Ministry.
Upon establishment of Government Kurti 2, in March 2021, Mr Sveçla was appointed Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
